Road to LA 2028: Nigeria awaits Sudan/Comoros clash in Olympic qualifiers

Posted : 30 April 2026

Nigeria’s journey to the women’s football event of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games will begin with a second-round showdown against either Sudan or Comoros, following the African qualifiers draw held at the Confederation of African Football headquarters in Cairo.

The Super Falcons, 10-time African champions, received a first-round bye and will now face the winner of the preliminary tie between Sudan and Comoros scheduled for early October.

The decisive fixtures are billed for the weekends of October 5 and 13.

With 35 nations entering the race, the qualifiers promise a fiercely competitive campaign as teams battle through five rounds for just two available tickets to represent Africa at the Olympics.

Heavyweights such as South Africa, Morocco, Zambia, and Ghana are among the contenders, alongside emerging sides from across the continent, underlining the depth and growing competitiveness of women’s football in Africa.

The qualification series will ultimately determine the continent’s two representatives at the Olympic Games scheduled to run from July 11 to July 29, 2028, in Los Angeles.

For Nigeria, the draw presents a relatively smooth entry point, but the road to the Olympics remains long and demanding.

The Super Falcons must maintain peak performance throughout the upcoming rounds to navigate the challenging qualification path. Securing one of the two slots will require consistency and resilience against Africa's elite footballing nations.
