2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 19: Rivers United Set for Titanic Battle Against Rangers Int’l

Posted : 28 December 2025

One of the Nigeria Premier Football League’s most storied rivalries returns to centre stage on Matchday 19 as Rivers United FC welcome Rangers International FC to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The Pride of Rivers go into the encounter in buoyant mood after grinding out a valuable draw against Katsina United on Matchday 18. That result further underlined their consistency this season, with the Finidi George–tutored side currently sitting top of the NPFL standings on 34 points from 18 matches.

Rivers United have suffered only two defeats all season and remain the only Nigerian club still competing in continental football, a testament to their strength and depth across competitions.

Rangers International, however, will not be short on motivation. The Flying Antelopes share a closely contested rivalry with Rivers United, with little separating the two sides in recent seasons. In their last five meetings, neither team has truly dominated, with most matches decided by a single goal, and Rivers United scoring more than once in only one of those encounters.

For Rangers, the current campaign has been a search for stability. The seven-time league champions are still working to rediscover the form that brought them league success in recent years. Although inconsistency has slowed their progress, their current fifth-place position on 29 points keeps them firmly in the title conversation.

A notable subplot ahead of the clash is the absence of Rangers’ Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, who is currently in Morocco serving as an assistant to National Technical Adviser Eric Chelle. His absence could present a slight disadvantage for the visitors in a contest likely to be decided by tactical discipline and fine margins.

Rivers United head coach Yemi Olanrewaju has been clear about his ambitions, expressing confidence in his team’s ability to secure maximum points on home soil. With league leadership and bragging rights on the line, Port Harcourt is set to witness another fiercely contested chapter in this enduring NPFL rivalry.
