Rivers United, Nigeria’s sole representative on the continent this season, clinched a dramatic late victory over Kano Pillars in their rescheduled NPFL Match Day 15 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The intense encounter appeared to be heading for a goalless stalemate until Boluwaji Shomade struck in the 90th minute, sealing a vital three points for the Pride of Rivers.
Despite being reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute—after defender Isaac Annor was shown a straight red card for a reckless tackle—Rivers United kept applying pressure on the visitors’ backline and were eventually rewarded for their persistence.
Kano Pillars adopted a compact and disciplined approach, frustrating the hosts for most of the evening.
Their tactical setup held firm as they defended deep and in numbers, determined to return to Kano with at least a point. But their resistance finally broke at the decisive moment, allowing Rivers United to assert their dominance late on.
The Port Harcourt side controlled the bulk of possession and created the clearer chances but struggled to convert until Shomade’s late intervention changed the storyline.
The win lifts Rivers United to 26 points from 13 matches, cementing their position in third place and keeping them within touching distance of joint leaders Ikorodu City and Nasarawa United, who both sit on 27 points.
With two games in hand, Rivers United remain well-positioned to challenge for the top spot as the season progresses.
Kano Pillars, meanwhile, continue to struggle at the bottom of the table with nine points—a situation further worsened by their earlier three-point deduction.
