Rivers United return to summit after dominant victory over El-Kanemi Warriors

Posted : 05 March 2026

Rivers United delivered one of their most convincing performances of the season after overpowering El-Kanemi Warriors 3–0 in a rescheduled Match Day 23 fixture of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The encounter, played under steady rain at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium on Wednesday evening, saw the Port Harcourt side combine attacking efficiency with defensive solidity to secure their biggest victory of the campaign.

Heading into the game, the Pride of Rivers had been grinding out narrow 1–0 wins in recent weeks, but they produced a more ruthless display against the Maiduguri side to reclaim top spot in the league standings.

Wisdom Samuel set the tone early, rewarding manager Finidi George’s decision to hand him a rare start. The winger needed just nine minutes to break the deadlock, finishing confidently to give the hosts a deserved early advantage.

Samuel, who joined Rivers United from Heartland FC and has mostly featured from the bench this season, looked lively throughout the opening half and justified his inclusion with a performance full of energy and purpose.

Rivers United continued to dictate proceedings after the interval and were rewarded when Chijioke Mbaoma doubled the lead from the penalty spot. The former NPFL top scorer, who recently joined the club as a free agent after leaving Al Ittihad SC, calmly converted to register his first goal for the club.

With the visitors struggling to contain the attacking pressure, Samuel returned to the spotlight late in the game, producing a superb strike to complete his brace and seal an emphatic victory for the hosts.

Beyond the scoreline, the result extended Rivers United’s unbeaten run against El-Kanemi Warriors to six matches, underlining their dominance in recent meetings between the two sides.

More significantly, the win lifts Finidi George’s men back to the top of the NPFL table, two points ahead of Enugu Rangers while still holding two games in hand.

Attention will now shift to Sunday’s South-South derby against Bendel Insurance, where Rivers United will look to maintain their momentum as the title race gathers pace.
