Rivers United Reclaim Top Spot as Ikorodu City Bolster Continental Hopes in NPFL Matchday 34

Posted : 13 April 2026

Rivers United returned to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League standings after securing a vital 1-0 victory against Plateau United. The decisive moment came early in the contest at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium. Wisdom Samuel found the back of the net in the 11th minute to ensure the Port Harcourt club moved to 58 points.

This result allowed Rivers United to leapfrog Rangers International. The Flying Antelopes could only manage a 0-0 draw during their trip to face Niger Tornadoes in Minna. Consequently, Rangers now sit two points behind the leaders as the title race enters its final stages.

In Lagos, Ikorodu City continued their remarkable debut season with a convincing 3-0 win over Kano Pillars. Joseph Arumala maintained his fine scoring form by netting his 12th goal of the campaign in the 28th minute. Tosin Oyedokun doubled the advantage in the 70th minute before Abayomi Ayodeji added a third late in the game. The Oga Boys now occupy third place with 55 points.

The race to avoid the drop provided equal drama across several venues. Defending champions Remo Stars faced a massive setback in Kano, losing 2-1 to Barau FC. Despite Haruna Hadi giving the Sky Blue Stars the lead, Joseph Atule and Joseph Kemin scored to complete a comeback for the hosts. This defeat leaves Remo Stars in a precarious 19th position.

Enyimba eased their own relegation fears with a dominant 3-0 win over Katsina United in Aba. Stanley Dimgba, Chidera Michael, and Wonah Williams were all on the scoresheet for the nine-time champions. The People's Elephant climbed to 12th place on the log following the victory.

Wikki Tourists recorded a rare away win by beating Bayelsa United 1-0 in Yenagoa. Imamu Bala scored the winner in the 67th minute to silence the home crowd. Meanwhile, bottom-club Kun Khalifat kept their slim survival hopes alive by defeating Wolves 3-0. A brace from Uchechukwu Onuoha ensured they stayed within touching distance of the teams above them.

The relegation battle remains incredibly tight. Only one point separates 16th-placed Kwara United from 19th-placed Remo Stars. With four teams set to go down, every point has become crucial for the clubs currently sitting on 40 points.
