Posted : 17 October 2025

Rivers United have arrived in Maputo, Mozambique, ahead of their CAF Champions League second-round first-leg clash against Black Bulls.

Rivers United, one of Nigeria’s flag bearers in the 2025/2026 CAF Champions League, have arrived safely in Maputo, Mozambique, ahead of their second-round first-leg clash against Black Bulls. The team departed Nigeria on Wednesday and touched down in Mozambique on Thursday as preparations intensify for the crucial encounter.

The Rivers United delegation, consisting of players, coaches, and backroom staff, began their journey from Port Harcourt to Lagos on Tuesday before flying out of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport to Mozambique. The much-anticipated first-leg fixture will take place on Saturday, October 18, at the Campo da ABB Stadium in Maputo.

The return leg is scheduled for the following weekend at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Nigeria. The aggregate winner from the two-legged tie will advance to the CAF Champions League group stage, joining the continent’s elite clubs in the prestigious competition.

In officiating matters, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Namibian referee Negongo Mweshitsama Naftal to handle the first leg in Maputo. He will be assisted by compatriots Alex Muzibwene Lumponjani and Hangula Velinoma Angula, while Fillipus Hanyemunange Nghilinganye will serve as the fourth official. Suleiman Othman of Zanzibar has been designated as the match commissioner.

The Pride of Rivers, as Rivers United are fondly called, will be looking to build on their strong domestic form and secure a positive result in Mozambique to boost their chances of reaching the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League.

The team’s fans back home in Nigeria remain optimistic that Rivers United can deliver a solid performance away from home and continue their quest to make history on the African stage.
