2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 20: Rivers United Hold Firm as Rangers’ Push Ends in Stalemate

Posted : 16 January 2026

Rivers United underlined their credentials as Nigeria Premier Football League leaders with a disciplined 0–0 draw against Rangers International at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Matchday 20 of the 2025/26 season. Despite sustained pressure from the hosts, the Pride of Rivers relied on solid defensive organisation and an outstanding goalkeeping display from Osagie Onisodumeya to claim a valuable point on the road.

Rangers International enjoyed a brighter start and gradually took control after a cautious opening. Their first clear chance arrived inside the opening quarter-hour when Oputa Chibueze’s well-weighted cross found Godwin Obaje, but Onisodumeya reacted sharply to deny the forward. The Flying Antelopes continued to dictate play through captain Chidiebere Nwobodo and Kenechukwu Agu, yet repeated attempts from range and tight angles failed to break the visitors’ resistance.

Although largely on the defensive in the first half, Rivers United showed flashes of attacking intent. Maclyn Biokpo threatened after capitalising on a defensive lapse, while Babatunde Bello tested Rangers goalkeeper Abine George with a curling effort from distance. As the half progressed, the game opened up, but both backlines stood firm to ensure a goalless interval.

The second half saw Rangers return with renewed urgency, pressing Rivers United deep into their territory. Obaje, Agu, and Emmanuel Essine all went close, only to be denied by the calm and commanding presence of Onisodumeya. Rangers coach Ekenedilichukwu Ekeh introduced Wisdom Ebirim and Evans Ogbonda in search of a breakthrough, with Ogbonda’s free-kick flashing dangerously across goal.

Rivers United almost stole victory late on when a misjudged clearance by Abine George presented Biokpo with a long-range opportunity, but his effort drifted narrowly wide. Rangers mounted a final push in the closing minutes, yet Onisodumeya remained alert to preserve his clean sheet.

In the end, honours were even, with Rivers United extending their unbeaten run to three matches and maintaining top spot on the NPFL table with 38 points. For Rangers International, it was a frustrating evening marked by dominance without reward, while Rivers United departed Enugu with a point that could prove decisive in the title race.
