Rivers United Five-Star Display Sends Kun Khalifat Crashing

Posted : 25 September 2026

Rivers United produced a dominant attacking display on Thursday, beating Kun Khalifat 5-0 in their Match Day 5 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture in Port Harcourt. The victory moved the Pride of Rivers into second place with 10 points from four matches.

Salman Abubakar led the scoring with two goals, while Chijioke Mbaoma, Wasiu Falolu and substitute Ekene Awazie also found the net. The result extended Rivers United's unbeaten start to the campaign, with three wins and one draw from their four matches.

Rivers United controlled much of the opening half but needed 27 minutes to break through. Abubakar produced a fine strike from outside the penalty area to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Kun Khalifat managed to keep the deficit at one goal until the interval. The visitors, however, struggled to contain Rivers United after the restart as the home side increased the pressure.

Mbaoma doubled the advantage in the 49th minute after being set up by Alex Oyowah. Abubakar then scored his second nine minutes later to put Rivers United three goals ahead.

Falolu added the fourth in the 62nd minute, with Mbaoma turning provider. Awazie completed the scoring in the 84th minute after coming off the bench, giving Rivers United their biggest victory of the campaign.

The five-goal haul was also significant in Rivers United's recent history. It was the club's first time scoring at least five goals in a competitive match since June 2024, ending a run of 95 matches without reaching that mark.

The victory also strengthened Rivers United's position near the top of the early NPFL standings. The club had already beaten Plateau United and Warri Wolves and drawn with Nasarawa United before Thursday's emphatic home win.

Kun Khalifat, meanwhile, remain 19th with two points from five matches. They have conceded 13 goals and scored four, following earlier defeats to Bendel Insurance and Enugu Rangers.

For coach Finidi George, the performance provided another indication of Rivers United's attacking potential. The team will next face Ranchers Bees on September 27, while Kun Khalifat are scheduled to host Kwara United on the same day.
