Rivers United FC players and officials escaped serious harm after their team vehicle was involved in a road traffic accident on the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road near Port Harcourt.
The club had just left its camp en route to Awka for the President Federation Cup Round of 16 tie against Nasarawa United, scheduled for Saturday, 6 June 2026.
Club sources said several people suffered only minor injuries and are receiving medical care. All are reported to be stable.
Rivers United released a brief statement saying the squad and staff are “grateful there were no fatalities” and that further updates on travel arrangements and the status of the cup fixture will follow once the club completes medical checks and evaluates logistics.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed sympathy and relief in response to the accident. In a statement, NFF General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi said the federation was “shocked” by the news, thanked God that there were no fatalities, and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The NFF’s fixtures currently list Rivers United versus Nasarawa United in Awka with a 4 p.m. kickoff, and the winner will advance to the quarter-finals.
With players undergoing treatment and the club assessing next steps, the immediate focus is on the wellbeing of those affected.
Fans and stakeholders will be watching closely for the club’s travel update and any official word from the NFF about whether the scheduled match will proceed as planned.
The football community continues to rally behind the Port Harcourt-based side during this challenging period. The prioritisation of health assessments remains the paramount concern before any competitive commitments resume. The upcoming updates will determine how the team navigates both their recovery and their aspirations in the domestic cup competition.
