Rivers United Technical Manager Finidi George says the club is already turning its attention to the President Federation Cup after narrowly missing out on the 2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title.
The Port Harcourt-based side finished second on the league table with 67 points, just one point behind champions Rangers International after a fiercely contested campaign.
Despite the disappointment, Finidi insisted that the title race was not lost on the final day but through avoidable setbacks earlier in the season.
“It is quite unfortunate because we fought very hard throughout the season,” Finidi said. “The league was not decided in our last match alone. Some poor results earlier in the campaign made us depend on other teams.”
With the league now concluded, Rivers United have quickly redirected their focus to the President Federation Cup, where they will face Rangers International in a blockbuster Round of 32 clash scheduled for June 1 in Uyo.
The former Super Eagles winger also revealed plans to strengthen the squad ahead of next season as the club prepares for another NPFL title push and a return to continental football through the CAF Champions League.
Finidi expressed confidence that strategic recruitment and improved consistency would help Rivers United compete more strongly on all fronts next season.
The technical manager remains optimistic that the lessons learned from this campaign will fuel the team's determination to bring silverware to Port Harcourt in the near future. By addressing squad depth and maintaining a high level of performance throughout the grueling upcoming schedule, the club aims to secure a dominant position domestically and continentally. Ultimately, building a more resilient roster will be key to converting close championship runs into tangible trophies for the loyal supporters.
