NPFL Match Day 3 Review: Rivers United Grind Out Draw Against El-Kanemi Warriors

Posted : 08 September 2025

Title-chasing Rivers United of Port Harcourt were made to work hard on Sunday as they shared the spoils in a goalless encounter with El-Kanemi Warriors during Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Match Day 3 in Maiduguri.

The match lived up to expectations as a tightly fought contest. Both teams pressed for an opener in the first half but could not break through resilient defences. After the interval, El-Kanemi introduced fresh legs to boost their attack. Coach Kabiru Dogo brought on Ismaila Bello for Rislanu Ismail, Mas’ud Danjuma for Jonas Emmanuel, and Salisu Ibrahim Nasara for Ebuka Okoro in search of a breakthrough. Despite enjoying spells of dominance in the second half and creating several chances, the hosts could not find the net.

After the match, El-Kanemi coach Kabiru Dogo expressed satisfaction with his side’s progress.
“My boys played to instructions against a very strong Rivers United side. Compared to past seasons, you can see the improvement whenever we host them. I ask our fans to be patient—it’s not easy, but In Sha Allah, we will turn things around,” he said.

Team captain Muktar Ismail also praised the team’s effort:
“We thank Almighty Allah for the result. We played well, though not exactly how we wanted. I urge our supporters to stay hopeful—we’ll make them proud soon.”

On the other side, Rivers United coach Finidi George acknowledged the difficulty of playing in Maiduguri.
“It’s never easy here, but we expected a tough game and we’re grateful for the point. I’ve been in this league for six years, and I can say things are improving. Hopefully, we’ll get to where we want to be soon.”

He also thanked the Maiduguri crowd for their warm reception:
“I appreciate the fans for turning up in large numbers and showing me love as a former Nigerian international—it means a lot.”

The result leaves El-Kanemi Warriors in seventh place with five points after three games. They will travel for a Match Day 4 clash against Kun Khalifa, while Rivers United continue their push near the top of the standings.
