Rivers United Football Club have kicked off preparations for what promises to be a demanding 2026/2027 campaign, with the team holding its first pre-season training session at the Garden City Sports Centre, Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, in Port Harcourt.
The opening session, held on Monday, was overseen by Technical Manager Finidi George and his coaching staff as the Pride of Rivers officially began work ahead of the new season.
Players and officials had earlier returned to camp following the reopening of the club's facilities on Sunday, signalling the start of full pre-season activities.
Addressing the squad, General Manager Okey Kpalukwu welcomed both returning and newly recruited players, urging them to remain disciplined and committed throughout the preparation period.
Kpalukwu reminded the players that they carry the expectations of the Rivers State Government, the people of the state, and football fans across Nigeria, while assuring them of the club sponsors' unwavering support during the campaign.
Rivers United face a packed schedule this season, with the club set to compete in the CAF Champions League, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), and the President Federation Cup.
Finidi said the initial phase of training would centre on improving players' fitness, strengthening tactical understanding, and helping new signings settle quickly into the squad.
"We will focus on building fitness levels, establishing tactical cohesion, and integrating our new players. With the demands of continental football, thorough preparation from the beginning is essential," the former Super Eagles winger said.
Having finished among the top teams in the NPFL last season, Rivers United will be aiming to challenge strongly on both the domestic and continental fronts.
The club is expected to announce its pre-season fixtures and further squad updates in the coming weeks.
With preparations now underway, Rivers United will be looking to build momentum ahead of a challenging season as they seek success in the league, the Federation Cup, and the CAF Champions League.
