An intelligent finish from Okon Aniekeme ensured Rivers United FC began their 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 21 home fixture on a high, recording a hard-fought 1–0 victory over defending champions Remo Stars. The result helped Rivers United remain four points clear at the top of the NPFL table.
The Pride of Rivers were unfortunate not to take the lead before halftime, having dominated large spells of the first half. Ubong Friday, Boluwaji Sholumade, Stephen Manyo, and Taofeek Otaniyi all came close to breaking the deadlock as Rivers United kept Remo Stars under sustained pressure.
After the interval, Rivers United continued to push forward, and their persistence paid off in the 80th minute. Aniekeme found the back of the net from a well-delivered free kick by teenage sensation Ochobi Elias, sealing victory in the Matchday 21 encounter played at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
Ochobi Elias, a graduate of Rivers United’s NPFL U-17 Youth League title-winning side, was introduced in the 75th minute and made an immediate impact. His pinpoint free-kick delivery allowed Aniekeme to slot home what proved to be the decisive goal.
Scoring against his former club — having also done so in the reverse fixture on Matchday 1 — made the moment even more special for Aniekeme and capped a memorable night for Rivers United, who now turn their attention to continental competition.
Rivers United technical manager Finidi George praised his side’s performance after the match, highlighting their attacking intent and resilience.
“It was a good game. We created more chances to score, but that didn’t happen early on. We are quite happy with the victory that came in the second half,” Finidi said.
Rivers United FC will now shift focus to the CAF Champions League, returning to continental action on Saturday, January 24, when they travel to Ndola, Zambia, to face Power Dynamo FC in their Matchday 3 fixture.
