‘Right decision’ – Arsenal’s Okonkwo discusses Wrexham transfer

Posted : 20 May 2025

Arthur Okonkwo, a product of Arsenal’s youth academy, has called his permanent transfer to Wrexham last summer “the right move,” reflecting on his significant contribution to the club’s recent success. After initially joining on loan during the 2023/24 season, Okonkwo returned as a free agent and became a key figure in Wrexham’s League One campaign.

At 23 years old, Okonkwo made 33 league appearances, keeping 19 clean sheets, which was crucial in Wrexham’s automatic promotion to the Championship. The team secured their place in England’s second tier with a convincing 3-0 victory against Charlton Athletic at their home ground, the Racecourse.

In an interview with Leader Live, Okonkwo praised Wrexham’s manager Phil Parkinson, highlighting his clear vision and leadership as a major factor in his decision to sign permanently. He said he immediately knew it was the right choice after their initial talks last summer.

Okonkwo expressed confidence in the manager’s plan and the players brought in to execute it, saying the team’s success this season wasn’t a surprise to him. He believed from the start that the squad was capable of achieving promotion and was proud of the hard work and dedication displayed throughout the campaign.

He described the promotion day as emotional and rewarding, emphasizing the team’s ability to stay composed under pressure, especially in the crucial final match against Charlton. Okonkwo credited the unity and resilience of the squad as key to overcoming the challenges they faced.

Looking forward, Okonkwo acknowledged the step up to the Championship will be demanding but expressed optimism about Wrexham’s preparation and potential. He stressed the need for improvement but also plans to enjoy the moment before focusing on the upcoming season.

As Wrexham prepares for life in the Championship, Okonkwo aims to maintain his impressive form to help the club push further, with hopes of eventually reaching the Premier League.
