Report reveals details of Pape Thiaw's contract talks with Senegal FA

Posted : 14 July 2026

Fresh details have emerged regarding the contract negotiations between former Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw and the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), shedding light on the reported financial demands that dominated discussions before an agreement was reached.

According to Senegalese journalist Bacary Cissé, the negotiations were prolonged and involved government officials during the Teranga Lions' trip to the United States. The report claimed there were concerns that the talks could affect preparations for international fixtures before both parties eventually reached a compromise.

The report alleged that Thiaw initially requested a monthly salary of approximately $89,000, a signing bonus of around $642,000, a World Cup qualification bonus worth about $268,000 and an annual image rights payment estimated at $89,000. It also claimed his monthly salary would increase to roughly $112,000 if Senegal reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.

According to the report, negotiations continued after a telephone conversation between Thiaw and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye while the national team was in the United States.

Following those discussions, Thiaw reportedly reduced his salary demand to about $54,000 per month. However, the report claimed he also requested a signing bonus of approximately $785,000, additional special bonuses totalling around $892,000 and a World Cup-winning bonus of about $1.78 million.

The report further alleged that, shortly before Senegal's international match against Norway, Thiaw made his appearance on the bench conditional on the signing of his contract. That claim has not been independently confirmed.

Further negotiations reportedly resulted in a revised agreement between the coach and the federation. Under the reported terms, Thiaw accepted a monthly salary of approximately $54,000 and a signing bonus of around $214,000. The signing bonus was reportedly to be funded by the Senegalese government and paid in quarterly instalments.

The report also claimed the former coach requested an additional federation bonus equivalent to one percent of any prize money earned if Senegal won a major international tournament. Another special bonus valued at approximately $321,000 was also reportedly included, with payments spread over three years.

Neither the Senegal Football Federation nor Pape Thiaw has officially confirmed or denied the reported figures or the details of the negotiations.

The revelations come shortly after the federation dismissed Thiaw following Senegal's elimination in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His departure has intensified debate over the team's future and the circumstances surrounding his tenure as head coach.
