Renewed Hope Unity Cup to Feature Teams From All 774 Nigerian LGAs

The inaugural Renewed Hope Unity Cup will feature grassroots football teams from all 774 Local Government Areas across Nigeria. The nationwide tournament is scheduled to run from October 1 to December 1, 2026, with organisers aiming to promote unity, discover young talent and strengthen grassroots football development.

The competition has received official endorsement from the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Both organisations described the initiative as a major step towards expanding football opportunities for young players across the country.

The endorsement was announced during the unveiling of the tournament's official logo. Organisers described the competition as one of Nigeria's most ambitious grassroots football projects, with participation expected from every local government area.

Representing NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko, the Commission's Director of Facilities, Dr. Muhammad Rabiu, said football remains one of the strongest tools for promoting national unity because of its popularity across Nigeria. He added that the tournament's logo represents the vision and long-term objectives of the competition rather than serving as only a visual identity.

Rabiu also highlighted the Federal Government's increased investment in sports infrastructure. He disclosed that more than ₦200 billion has been allocated for the rehabilitation and development of sports facilities after several years without dedicated maintenance funding. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's support for sports and reaffirmed the Commission's ambition to make Nigeria a leading sporting nation in Africa.

National Coordinator and Convener of the Renewed Hope Unity Cup, Dr. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, said the tournament is designed to create opportunities for talented footballers, especially those from rural and underserved communities. He noted that players will have the chance to perform in front of professional clubs, football academies and international scouts.

Kwande revealed that participating teams will receive football equipment and welfare support throughout the competition. He also announced that every match will be professionally produced and streamed on digital platforms to increase visibility for players and the tournament.

In addition, organisers will launch a nationwide Train-the-Trainer programme to provide modern coaching education for selected coaches from each of Nigeria's 774 local government areas. The initiative is expected to strengthen grassroots coaching standards and create a sustainable pathway for youth football development across the country.

Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, represented by Sokoto State Football Association Chairman Muhammed Nasir, praised the organisers for introducing the competition. He said football remains a powerful force for national integration and expressed confidence that the Renewed Hope Unity Cup could become one of Nigeria's flagship grassroots football tournaments while complementing the NFF's talent identification programmes.
