Defending champions Remo Stars finally halted their alarming losing streak with a dramatic late comeback to defeat El Kanemi Warriors 2–1 in their Match Day 12 clash in Abeokuta on Monday.
The result ended a worrying run of five straight defeats in all competitions and lifted the Sky Blue Stars out of the relegation zone.
Despite dominating the opening 45 minutes, Remo Stars found frustration at every turn. Victor Mbaoma rattled the crossbar in first-half stoppage time, while Olamilekan Adedayo and Adama Goita both forced strong saves from the resolute El Kanemi goalkeeper. The visitors’ defensive structure ensured the champions reached the break goalless despite their control.
The tension heightened in the 58th minute when Jonas Emmanuel stunned the home fans, rising highest to glance in a header from a corner to put El Kanemi ahead.
With head coach Daniel Ogunmodede absent on national duty, assistant coach Sulaimon Kamil made decisive changes, introducing pace and attacking intent through substitutes Haruna Hadi and Samson Olasupo.
The momentum swung back to the hosts as they pressed relentlessly for a response. Their breakthrough arrived late when Mbaoma was brought down inside the penalty area and calmly slotted home the equaliser in the 87th minute.
Buoyed by the goal, Remo Stars surged forward for a winner. Their persistence was rewarded deep into stoppage time when a loose ball from the goalkeeper’s parry fell to Michael Ibe, who fired a composed low strike into the net in the 95th minute—sparking wild celebration.
The vital win lifts Remo Stars to 16th place with 13 points and two games in hand, restoring belief after a turbulent period. With renewed confidence, the champions will now aim to build momentum as they prepare to host Enugu Rangers again at the same venue on Thursday.
