2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 20: Remo Stars Celebrate Ikenne Return with Narrow Derby Win

Posted : 16 January 2026

Defending champions Remo Stars marked their long-awaited return to the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Ikorodu City on NPFL Matchday 20. The Sky Blue Stars combined discipline, patience, and defensive solidity to secure three crucial points, kicking off the second half of the 2025/26 season on a positive note.

After months on the road and an uneven first half of the campaign at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Remo Stars appeared rejuvenated by the familiarity of their home ground. The match came after a 16-day mid-season break and featured the unveiling of two new signings: Fabian Nworie immediately joined the starting lineup, while forward Albert Korvah was included in the matchday squad, signaling the team’s renewed intent.

The first half was cagey, with Remo Stars controlling possession and probing for openings but failing to create clear-cut chances. Victor Mbaoma went closest with a near-range effort, and Chigozie Chilekwu caused problems with his wide deliveries. Ikorodu City remained dangerous on the counter, but timely interventions from goalkeeper Alladoum Kolimba kept the scores level at halftime.

The decisive moment arrived just two minutes into the second half when Haruna Hadi capitalized on sustained pressure, firing home in the 47th minute to give the hosts the lead. With momentum on their side, Remo Stars shifted focus to game management, frustrating Ikorodu City’s late attempts to find an equalizer.

Substitutes, including Samuel Anakwe, had opportunities to extend the advantage, but the champions were content to protect their slim lead. Despite sustained pressure from the visitors, Remo Stars held firm, closing out the match with composure and control.

Beyond the result, the victory served as a statement of intent. Following heightened emotions from the reverse fixture in Lagos and NPFL-mediated peace talks in Abuja, Remo Stars’ return to Ikenne restored confidence, rhythm, and belief. This narrow but vital derby win could prove pivotal as the champions continue their title defence in the second half of the season.
