Real Madrid Thrash RB Leipzig 4-1 to Maintain Perfect Champions League Record

Posted : 22 October 2026

Real Madrid continued their impressive start to the UEFA Champions League with a convincing 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig on Wednesday, recording their third consecutive win in the competition. Bernardo Silva, Arda Guler, Kylian Mbappe and Yan Diomande scored for the Spanish giants, while Tidiam Gomis netted Leipzig's only goal. The result strengthened Madrid's position in the league phase as they pursue a place among the top eight teams.

The hosts broke the deadlock shortly before half-time after a relatively cautious opening period. Federico Valverde created the opportunity with a cutback for Guler, whose attempt was stopped by Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt. Silva reacted quickly to the rebound and finished from close range to give Madrid the lead. Seven minutes into the second half, Guler doubled the advantage by turning in Mbappe's header after Jude Bellingham delivered the ball into the box.

Mbappe extended Madrid's lead with a composed finish, curling the ball into the net after Diomande pulled it back from the edge of the penalty area. Leipzig responded soon afterwards when Dean Huijsen failed to deal with the situation defensively, allowing Gomis to score past Thibaut Courtois. However, Madrid restored their three-goal cushion late in the match as Diomande connected with Brahim Diaz's cross and struck a powerful volley into the top corner.

Kylian Mbappe continued his outstanding scoring form, finding the net for the third time in Madrid's Champions League campaign. The French forward has now scored 12 goals in 12 appearances this season and remains determined to improve further. Speaking after the match, he said he believed he could contribute more despite being satisfied with his current performances. He also stressed the importance of collecting as many points as possible to secure a place in the competition's top eight.

The victory marked Madrid's fourth consecutive win across all competitions and provided a timely confidence boost ahead of their La Liga Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday. However, manager José Mourinho played down the idea that momentum alone would determine the outcome, describing the rivalry as different from an ordinary league fixture. He also expressed concern about Madrid having 24 fewer hours of recovery time than Barcelona, who played their Champions League match on Tuesday.

Madrid also had to manage Vinícius Júnior's disappointment after the Brazilian was substituted for Diomande in the second half. Vinícius, who is serving a four-match La Liga suspension, will miss the upcoming Clasico. Mbappe urged his teammate to remain confident, while Mourinho defended the winger's contribution and explained that introducing Diomande was a tactical decision based on the options available from the bench. Diomande justified the substitution with a spectacular finish to seal the victory.

With three wins from three Champions League matches, Real Madrid have established themselves among the early pace-setters in the league phase. Their emphatic performance against Leipzig offers encouragement as they prepare for a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures, beginning with the highly anticipated showdown against Barcelona.
