Real Madrid’s Mbappé Expected to Travel for Champions League Match vs Manchester City

Posted : 14 March 2026

Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa expressed optimism on Friday that star forward Kylian Mbappé will be able to travel with the team for their vital Champions League round-of-16 second-leg game against Manchester City next week.

Mbappé missed Wednesday’s 3-0 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu, where midfielder Federico Valverde stepped up with a hat trick. The France international has been sidelined due to a left knee sprain that has affected him since December, leaving Real Madrid to navigate a series of high-stakes matches, including the upcoming City clash and a LaLiga derby against Atletico Madrid.

“[Mbappé] is getting better every day,” Arbeloa said ahead of Madrid’s league fixture with Elche. “His development is progressing as it should. We made a plan. It depends on his progress, but I think he’s doing very well. He won’t be available tomorrow, but I expect he’ll travel to Manchester.”

Mbappé remains Madrid’s top scorer with 38 goals across all competitions this season, but his knee issue has caused him to miss key games, including Madrid’s previous league meeting with City, most of the Spanish Supercopa, and the second leg of the Champions League playoff against Benfica.

When asked whether Mbappé might rest during the upcoming international break to aid recovery, Arbeloa declined to comment in detail. “That’s a long way off,” he said. “I want him to be able to travel to Manchester. We’ll see tomorrow and on Sunday, when we’ll make a final decision. Let’s hope he’s there, and that he’s ready against Atlético Madrid [on March 22]. As for France, we’ll see when the time comes.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s league game against Elche, Arbeloa promised to field a strong lineup despite the upcoming City match. “Tomorrow we’ll field the best possible XI to win,” he said. “The players have to end each match completely exhausted; it’s their job. They have to be ready to fight like they did on Wednesday.”

The coach also praised goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for his performance in the first leg against City.
