Real Madrid’s Early Trent Alexander-Arnold Move Already Paying Off

Posted : 02 July 2025

When Real Madrid opted to spend £8.4 million to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool just weeks before his contract expired, the decision was met with skepticism. Many questioned why the Spanish giants would pay a transfer fee for a player they could have acquired for free merely a month later.

However, Real Madrid, led by manager Xabi Alonso, were adamant about securing the right-back in time for their Club World Cup campaign. That early acquisition has already proven valuable, both on the pitch and financially.

Alexander-Arnold has started every match since joining and recently recorded his first assist in the tournament. His pinpoint cross set up 21-year-old striker Gonzalo Garcia for a decisive goal against Juventus, propelling Madrid into the quarter-finals. That single goal brought tangible rewards, adding £10 million to Real’s Club World Cup earnings, which already total around £43 million from reaching the last 16.

Had Alexander-Arnold joined later, he would have missed this crucial stage of the competition. Instead, his immediate impact has validated Real Madrid’s proactive strategy. The club now stands to earn as much as £125 million if they go on to lift the trophy, with a quarter-final clash against either Borussia Dortmund or Monterrey up next.

Former France international Gael Clichy weighed in on the decision, telling Dazn: “Of course it was worth paying the extra money. This has given Trent time to settle, and Real Madrid the chance to benefit straight away. It’s a win for both.”

Liverpool, meanwhile, benefited financially from a situation in which they were poised to lose one of their most valuable players for nothing. The early sale offered a much-needed return for a soon-to-be-free asset.

As the tournament progresses, Alexander-Arnold’s early integration into the Madrid setup may continue to yield dividends, proving that in football, timing can be just as crucial as talent.
