Real Madrid Part Ways with Alvaro Arbeloa as Jose Mourinho Return Nears

Posted : 09 June 2026

Real Madrid have officially announced the departure of head coach Alvaro Arbeloa, a move that is expected to accelerate Jose Mourinho’s anticipated return to the Santiago Bernabéu.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Spanish giants confirmed that both parties had reached an agreement to end Arbeloa’s tenure as first-team manager. The decision follows an earlier announcement from Arbeloa, who revealed in May that he would step down at the conclusion of the season.

Arbeloa was appointed on an interim basis in January following the departure of Xabi Alonso. However, his brief spell in charge proved challenging as Real Madrid struggled to compete on multiple fronts.

The club’s hopes of domestic success suffered a significant setback with an early Copa del Rey exit against second-division side Albacete in the round of 16. Real also endured a disappointing run in LaLiga, with a series of damaging defeats ending their pursuit of the league title.

European ambitions were similarly cut short when Bayern Munich eliminated Los Blancos in the Champions League quarterfinals. The campaign ultimately ended without a major trophy, marking a second consecutive season without silverware for the 15-time European champions.

The timing of Arbeloa’s departure announcement comes shortly after Florentino Pérez secured another term as club president. Reports suggest the club is now moving closer to bringing Mourinho back for a second spell in charge, more than a decade after his first stint with the Spanish powerhouse.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, winning a LaLiga title, a Copa del Rey, and a Spanish Super Cup during his time at the club. His potential return would mark one of the most significant managerial appointments in European football ahead of the new season.
