Real Madrid continued their perfect start to the LaLiga season with an emphatic 4-1 victory at Levante on Tuesday. Kylian Mbappe scored twice to take his league tally to seven goals in six matches, helping Xabi Alonso’s side maintain their 100 percent record.
Vinicius Junior opened the scoring with a brilliant finish, while Franco Mastantuono also found the net for the league leaders.
The match saw Vinicius, who had been frustrated at being substituted in the previous game against Espanyol, start on the left flank and deliver a commanding performance. After a bright opening, he broke the deadlock in the 28th minute following a flowing move.
Valencia goalkeeper Mathew Ryan initially denied Vinicius, and Mastantuono’s follow-up hit the bar, but moments later, Vinicius capitalized on a pass from Fede Valverde to curl the ball into the far post.
Levante responded through Karl Etta Eyong, who scored from close range after a deflected cross, giving the hosts a brief glimmer of hope. However, Mbappe quickly extinguished it, converting a penalty after being fouled by Unai Elgezabal and then rounding Ryan to score his second.
The French forward, who struggled initially after joining from PSG last summer, has regained form and now has nine goals in seven games across all competitions.
Meanwhile, second-placed Barcelona are set to visit Real Oviedo on Thursday, trailing Real Madrid by five points.
In England, Alexander Isak marked his third appearance for Liverpool by scoring his first goal in a 2-1 League Cup win over Southampton. The Sweden striker capitalized on a defensive error by Southampton’s goalkeeper Alex McCarthy to score in the 43rd minute.
Shea Charles equalized for the Championship side in the 76th minute, but Hugo Ekitike’s late strike ensured Liverpool’s victory, despite being sent off for removing his shirt during celebration. Liverpool have now won all seven of their opening matches across competitions.
Chelsea narrowly avoided an embarrassing exit in the League Cup after fielding a heavily rotated squad. Lincoln took the lead in the first half following a defensive error, but Tyrique George and Facundo Buonanotte turned the game around to secure a 2-1 victory.
Elsewhere, Burnley suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to third-tier Cardiff, while Wolves ended their poor run with a 2-0 win over Everton. Brighton demolished Barnsley 6-0 in the FA Cup, and Fulham edged past Cambridge United 1-0 to progress to the next round.
