Manuel Pellegrini has described Real Betis’ qualification for the Champions League as the fulfilment of a season-long objective, after the club secured a top-five finish in LaLiga with a 2-1 win over Elche.
The victory, sealed by a decisive late goal from Pablo Fornals in the 68th minute, guarantees Betis a place in Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since the 2005–06 campaign. The result marks a significant milestone for the Seville-based side, who have built steady European consistency in recent years.
Betis have qualified for continental football in each of the past six seasons and reached last year’s Europa Conference League final against Chelsea, underlining their rise in European competition. However, returning to the Champions League had remained the club’s long-term ambition.
After the match, Pellegrini highlighted the resilience of his squad throughout the season, praising their ability to recover from setbacks and maintain consistency. He said the achievement was especially meaningful given the challenges faced across the campaign.
The Chilean coach revealed that the team had set their Champions League target from the very beginning of the season, even referencing the opening team talk where the goal was written down as a collective commitment.
Supporters celebrated the historic qualification at full time, recognising the significance of returning to Europe’s top competition after two decades away. Betis now turn their attention to their final fixtures, including a clash with newly crowned LaLiga champions Barcelona.
