Real Betis came from behind to secure a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal against Braga on Wednesday, setting up a tense return match in Seville next Thursday.
The hosts took an early lead when Florian Grillitsch cleverly backheeled a corner past Pau Lopez, giving Braga the advantage inside the first five minutes.
Betis struggled to break down Braga’s resilient defense in the first half, with goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek producing several key saves to deny attempts from Marc Bartra, Abde Ezzalzouli, and Cucho Hernandez.
The deadlock was eventually broken in the 61st minute when Hernandez converted a penalty after Jean-Baptiste Gorby fouled Ezzalzouli in the box, giving Betis a vital away goal.
Both sides have demonstrated attacking flair in earlier rounds, with high-scoring second legs helping them overturn deficits to advance.
The other Europa League quarterfinal first legs continue on Thursday, with Nottingham Forest visiting Porto, Aston Villa traveling to Bologna, and Freiburg facing Celta Vigo. The return legs promise an exciting conclusion to the quarterfinal stage.
