Raphinha’s Return Boosts Barcelona as They Eye LaLiga Lead

Posted : 05 December 2025

Forward Raphinha’s return from a hamstring injury has played a pivotal role in Barcelona’s resurgence, helping the Catalans regain top spot in LaLiga. The Brazilian attacker is expected to start against Real Betis on Saturday as Barca aim to extend their lead over Real Madrid.

Raphinha has already made an immediate impact. He scored against Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou on Tuesday, contributing to a crucial victory over a direct title rival, and assisted two goals in the win against Alaves on his first start since his September injury.

Last season, Raphinha was instrumental in Barcelona’s domestic double, tallying 34 goals and 26 assists across 57 appearances in all competitions. Despite his achievements, he finished fifth in the Ballon d’Or, a result that raised eyebrows among fans and fellow professionals alike. Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone recently voiced his admiration for the Brazilian, praising his all-around game and questioning why he was not awarded the top individual honor.

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has also expressed his appreciation for Raphinha’s influence on the team. “When he’s on the pitch, he increases the dynamic level and intensity,” Flick said after the Atletico win. “Everyone feels that. The positive impact he has is amazing and very important.”

Raphinha’s leadership extends beyond his technical contributions. Known for his pressing and vocal presence on the field, he constantly encourages teammates to maintain intensity and focus. “I demand more from people who I know can give much more,” Raphinha explained. “It’s part of who I am. Afterward, in the dressing room, we celebrate the victory together.”

Even Flick has felt the effects of Raphinha’s presence, with the German coach receiving encouragement from the forward following a subdued performance against Alaves. Barcelona’s recent win over Atletico lifted spirits, and another victory in Seville against Real Betis would further solidify their momentum.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid, currently one point behind Barcelona, host Celta Vigo on Sunday. Los Blancos ended a streak of three consecutive league draws with a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, keeping the pressure on their city rivals.
