Rangers Move to Revive Women’s Team, Target NWFL Return

Posted : 17 September 2026

Rangers International Football Club are putting plans in place to re-establish their presence in the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), with the club working towards acquiring a league slot from Dannaz Ladies of Lagos.

Rangers General Manager, Amobi Ezeaku, disclosed this at a press briefing in Enugu on Wednesday, saying negotiations for the acquisition were about 80 per cent complete.

The development is expected to pave the way for Rangers Ladies to compete in the forthcoming NWFL season as the Enugu-based club expands its football structure.

Ezeaku also announced plans for an open screening exercise through which the club hopes to identify players capable of forming a competitive women’s squad.

Coach Favour Anieke, who previously guided the team during its championship campaign, is expected to continue in charge despite failing to secure promotion in the previous attempt.

According to Ezeaku, the women’s team will receive the same level of institutional support and attention as the men’s side as the club seeks to establish a sustainable structure for the team.

He said the immediate objective was to assemble a strong squad capable of competing effectively in the domestic league while creating a foundation for future ambitions in Nigerian and African women’s football.

On the team’s proposed home venue, Ezeaku listed Waka City Stadium in Awka, Anambra State, among the options under consideration.

He, however, said the club would prefer Rangers Ladies to use the same home ground as the men’s team whenever the facilities and scheduling permit.

Ezeaku further disclosed that the women’s side would eventually be fully integrated into the Rangers structure, particularly after the ongoing renovation of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, popularly known as the Cathedral, is completed.

The proposed return of Rangers Ladies to the NWFL marks another step in the club’s efforts to broaden its football operations while providing a stronger platform for female players in Enugu and the surrounding region.

With negotiations for the Dannaz Ladies slot nearing completion and player recruitment expected to commence soon, Rangers are positioning their women’s team for a fresh start in the NWFL.
