Rangers Submit ₦9bn Transfer Bid For Super Eagles Defender Ryan Alebiosu

Posted : 12 June 2026

Scottish Premiership powerhouse Rangers have launched a formal transfer bid worth £5 million, equivalent to ₦9 billion, to sign Nigerian right-back Ryan Alebiosu. The 55-time Scottish champions are searching for a high-quality replacement for long-serving club captain James Tavernier. The veteran full-back ended his historic 11-year spell at Ibrox after his team missed out on the domestic league title.

Tavernier leaves behind a monumental legacy, having registered an incredible 144 goals and 148 assists in 565 appearances for the Gers. His departure created a massive vacancy on the right side of the defense. Rangers identified the 24-year-old Blackburn Rovers defender as their primary transfer market target to step into the role.

Alebiosu enjoyed a highly impressive breakout season under manager Éric Chelle in the English Championship with Blackburn Rovers. The athletic wing-back featured in 40 league matches, scoring one goal and delivering five crucial assists as Rovers successfully avoided relegation. His excellent club form earned him a maiden international call-up to the Super Eagles squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The versatile defender made his international debut against Uganda during the tournament group stage in Morocco. Alebiosu is reportedly very close to finalizing personal terms with the Glasgow-based club. His potential arrival would ensure a quick adaptation period due to his previous playing experience in Scotland with Kilmarnock and St Mirren.

Rangers must beat out heavy competition from Italian Serie A club Genoa to complete the transfer. The Italian side failed with a concrete winter transfer window bid but remain keen on his signature. If the deal goes through, Alebiosu will reunite with fellow international teammate Emmanuel Fernandez at Ibrox next season.
