Rangers International FC delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, sweeping aside Bayelsa United 4–1 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, with centre-back Chidozie Iwundu at the heart of the victory.
The in-form defender struck twice inside the opening 17 minutes to set the tone for a commanding display. His first goal came in the 10th minute after Bayelsa United goalkeeper Chisoms Chiaha parried Kenneth Agu’s half-volley into his path, allowing Iwundu to calmly slot home his fourth goal of the campaign.
Seven minutes later, Rangers doubled their advantage. Ifeanyi Assurance delivered a precise corner, and Iwundu rose unmarked to power in a bullet header—his fifth goal of the season—making him the NPFL’s highest-scoring defender and a major threat from set-pieces.
The 23-year-old summer signing from Sunshine Stars has been a revelation, with earlier goals against Plateau United, Abia Warriors, and Shooting Stars underscoring his importance to the Flying Antelopes.
Bayelsa United briefly fought back in the 26th minute when Isa Yusuf unleashed a spectacular strike from distance, beating goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh at full stretch.
Rangers responded almost immediately, dominating set-pieces throughout the first half. Assurance’s deliveries repeatedly unsettled the visitors, and Iwundu came close to completing a remarkable hat-trick before a header was deflected wide.
Rangers restored their two-goal cushion in the 35th minute through a brilliant strike from Kenneth Agu. From a 25-yard free-kick, the midfielder curled home a superb effort, aided by a clever decoy run from Godwin Obaje.
Three minutes later, the Cathedral erupted as teenage sensation Chimobi Igwilo picked up the ball in midfield, dribbled past several Bayelsa United defenders, and slotted home elegantly for his first NPFL goal of the season, sealing the 4–1 rout.
Iwundu now stands as Rangers’ joint-highest scorer this season—remarkable for a centre-back—and a key figure in the club’s push up the NPFL table.
