“Defeat in league matches, a challenging time to our club” -Rangers Coach Ilechukwu

Posted : 11 December 2023

Rangers International FC's Head Coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu, characterized the club's recent performances as challenging times. He also labeled the string of winless games as a tough phase.

The team, five-time league winners, the Flying Antelopes of Enugu, suffered a defeat against Bayelsa United F.C in a Match Day 13 encounter of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier League (NPFL) at the Samson Yebowei Siasia Stadium, Yenagoa. A goal in each half condemned the Enugu side to its fifth loss of the season.

Coach Ilechukwu made two changes to the starting squad that narrowly lost to Plateau United, with Japhet Opubo starting as goalkeeper and Godwin Obaje replacing Okorie Chiedozie in attack. Rangers initially dominated the match, with goalkeeper Oladimeji Oluwaseun making critical saves in the first 30 minutes to keep the scores level.

However, just before halftime, Lawal Kehinde reacted swiftly inside the box to score the opening goal for Bayelsa United. Ekeson Okorie added to the visitor's woes with a goal in the 74th minute, taking advantage of a defensive mix-up to secure the home side's victory.

Reflecting on the match, Coach Ilechukwu acknowledged Bayelsa's win and expressed the team's challenging period. Despite the disappointment of three winless games, he emphasized the need to support and encourage the players to return to their best form.

Rangers' next fixture is against Sporting Lagos in Match Day 14. Presently, they hold the 12th position in the league table with 15 points from 12 matches.
