Rangers International FC have emerged as champions of the NPFL 2026 Pre-season Tournament after edging Plateau United 1-0 in a keenly contested final at the New Jos Stadium, Zaria Road, on Monday.
The reigning NPFL champions secured the title through Justice Akugre, who delivered the decisive moment by rising highest to power a header into the net following a dangerous corner kick.
Plateau United’s defence failed to deal with the delivery, leaving Akugre unmarked as he headed past the goalkeeper to hand Rangers the victory.
The result capped an impressive outing for Rangers, who used the Jos tournament as part of their preparations for the demanding 2026/27 campaign.
In the third-place playoff, hosts Mighty Jets defeated Katsina United 1-0 to claim the bronze position.
The pre-season tournament was organised to provide competitive preparation for Nigerian clubs set to represent the country in the 2026/27 CAF inter-club competitions, while also serving as a final test for participating teams ahead of the new NPFL season.
The 2026/27 NPFL season is scheduled to kick off next weekend.
