Rangers International FC of Enugu defied mounting off-field concerns to defeat visiting Niger Tornadoes 1–0 in their 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 14 clash on Sunday. The victory came amid speculations regarding the future of Technical Adviser Fidelis Ilechukwu, who was rumored to be at odds with the club’s management—claims the seven-time champions promptly denied in an official statement.
Backed by their passionate supporters at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the Flying Antelopes approached the encounter with a must-win mindset. Despite dominating proceedings, Rangers struggled with poor finishing in the first half, allowing the Ikon Allah Boys to withstand waves of pressure as the opening period ended goalless.
The second half turned into a tense end-to-end battle, but Rangers finally made the breakthrough in the 70th minute. Kenechukwu Agu, popularly known as “Oloko,” curled in a superb free kick from just outside the penalty area, sending the stadium into celebration.
Niger Tornadoes pushed for an equalizer, but their efforts fell short as Rangers held firm to claim the victory. The win lifts Rangers International to fifth place on the 20-team log after 14 matches.
After the match, Niger Tornadoes coach Maajin Mohammed accepted the defeat, saying, “In football, you win, you lose, and you draw. We will go back and plan for the next game.”
Rangers’ stand-in coach, Ekene Ekenedilichukwu, praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We planned for the game and thank God we won. The most important thing is that we played well and secured the three points.” He assured supporters that the technical crew would continue working to improve the team’s finishing.
