Rangers held by Sobemap in 2026/2027 CAF Champions League opener

Rangers International FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Benin Republic champions Sobemap FC in the first leg of their CAF Champions League first preliminary round tie at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta, on Sunday.

The result leaves the contest evenly poised, with the Flying Antelopes needing a stronger performance in the return leg to advance to the next round of Africa’s premier club competition.

Rangers started brightly and took a deserved lead in the 17th minute through defender Chidozie Nwundu, who reacted quickest to a goalmouth scramble before firing the ball into the net.

The Enugu-based side maintained control for much of the opening half and went into the interval with a slender advantage.

However, Rangers’ promising start was undone almost immediately after the restart when Sobemap levelled just 40 seconds into the second half.

The equaliser exposed a lapse in concentration by the Nigerian side and gave the visitors renewed confidence for the remainder of the encounter.

Rangers responded by pushing forward in search of a second goal, enjoying territorial advantage as they attempted to regain the lead.

Despite their efforts, the Flying Antelopes lacked the cutting edge required to break down the Sobemap defence, while the Benin champions remained a threat whenever they counter-attacked.

The Nigerian side could not find the decisive goal before the final whistle, leaving them with a frustrating draw on home soil.

With the tie now finely balanced, Rangers must improve their attacking efficiency and defensive concentration in the return leg if they are to avoid an early exit from the CAF Champions League.

The Flying Antelopes will also be aware that another lapse like the one that allowed Sobemap to score immediately after halftime could prove costly in the decisive second encounter.
