The match lived up to its billing as one of Nigeria’s most historic rivalries, with the visitors starting brightly and dictating the early pace while Rangers sat deep to absorb pressure.
Shooting Stars controlled possession in midfield during the opening exchanges, making it difficult for the Flying Antelopes to create clear chances in the first 15 minutes.
However, the hosts gradually found their rhythm midway through the first half, forcing the 3SC goalkeeper into several key saves. Their persistence paid off in the 38th minute, when defender Chiedozie Izundu pounced on a loose ball from a set piece to slot home what proved to be the match-winner.
The second half was a tense affair, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to convert, as Rangers’ backline stood firm to secure maximum points.
Speaking after the match, Rangers’ Assistant Coach, Kene Ekenedilichukwu, who stood in for Chief Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, hailed his players’ discipline and commitment.
“We deserved the win, and I’m proud of the boys. Their determination and teamwork made the difference. We’ll keep improving with every match,” he said.
In contrast, Shooting Stars’ Head Coach, Nurudeen Aweroro, praised his side’s performance despite the defeat, insisting there were positives to build on.
“We gave our best and created chances, but luck wasn’t on our side today. We’ll go back, correct our mistakes, and prepare better for the next match,” Aweroro stated, refusing to blame officiating for the result.
The victory keeps Rangers firmly in contention near the top of the NPFL table, while Shooting Stars will look to bounce back in their next outing.
