The Nigerian champions earned their advantage in a dramatic first-leg encounter at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Sunday, October 18. Despite being reduced to 10 players early in the match, Rangers showed resilience to secure a valuable victory against the Algerian champions.
Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh received a straight red card in the 13th minute after fouling MC Alger forward Zakaria Naidji. Rangers had to reorganize their defence, but the visitors failed to take advantage of their numerical superiority. MC Alger were also reduced to 10 men in the second half when Oussama Benhaoua was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
Rangers eventually broke the deadlock in the 84th minute when defender Kenneth Igboke converted a penalty. James Emo then doubled the advantage three minutes later, giving head coach Fidelis Ilechukwu's side a crucial cushion ahead of the return fixture.
The Flying Antelopes now face the challenge of maintaining their advantage in front of MC Alger's home supporters. The Algerian side must win by at least two goals to draw level on aggregate and force the tie into a deciding process, while a three-goal victory would secure qualification in regulation time.
The encounter carries significant importance for both clubs, with a place in the group stage of the 2026/2027 CAF Champions League at stake. Rangers advanced from the previous preliminary round after defeating Benin Republic's AS Sobemap 5-4 on penalties, following a 1-1 aggregate draw. MC Alger reached this stage after recording a 5-0 aggregate victory over Niger's ASN Nigelec.
Rangers will need to maintain their defensive discipline and make effective use of counterattacking opportunities if they are to complete the job in Algeria. Ilechukwu's players will also need to manage the pressure of the away atmosphere as they pursue a place among Africa's leading club sides.
The second leg is scheduled for Friday, October 23, at Stade Ali-la-Pointe in Douéra, Algiers, with kick-off set for 8:00 p.m. Nigerian time. The aggregate winner will advance to the group stage of the continent's premier club competition.
