Ranchers Bees FC of Kaduna have capped an impressive campaign by winning the 5th Gusau/Ahlan Preseason Tournament in Katsina, defeating Kwara United 7–6 on penalties in a tense final at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium.
The Kaduna-based outfit proved their resilience once again as neither side could break the deadlock during 90 minutes of regulation time.
Both teams approached the final with caution and discipline, producing an evenly matched contest in which defensive organisation dominated, leaving the encounter goalless at the end of regulation time.
With the trophy destined for a penalty shootout, Ranchers Bees once again displayed the composure that had taken them through their semi-final against Wikki Tourists.
The Kaduna side had also needed penalties to overcome Wikki Tourists after their semi-final ended 1–1, and they maintained their cool under pressure to defeat Kwara United 7–6 in the final shootout.
The triumph therefore represents more than just a tournament victory for Ranchers Bees, as the club demonstrated mental strength and consistency in two consecutive knockout matches decided from the spot.
Kwara United, meanwhile, can take encouragement from their run to the final despite the disappointment of narrowly missing out on the trophy. The Ilorin-based side matched their opponents throughout the decisive encounter but were unable to prevail in the lottery of penalties.
Ranchers Bees’ success provides an early boost ahead of the new football season, while the tournament has offered the participating clubs an important opportunity to assess their squads, improve match sharpness and test their tactical options.
With the 5th edition now concluded, Ranchers Bees FC leave Katsina as worthy champions after a campaign defined by resilience, composure and an ability to deliver when the pressure was at its highest.
