Racing Genk Hand Super Eagles Defender Christian Akpan New Four-Year Contract

Posted : 10 July 2026

Belgian Pro League club Racing Genk have confirmed that Nigerian defender Christian Akpan has signed a new four-year contract, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2030.

The announcement ends speculation surrounding the future of the 21-year-old, who had attracted interest from clubs outside Belgium after establishing himself as a key member of Genk's first-team squad.

Akpan joined Racing Genk in 2023 and progressed through Jong Genk before earning promotion to the senior side. Since then, he has become one of the club's most reliable defensive players through his consistent performances and versatility.

Capable of operating in multiple defensive positions, Akpan has impressed with his strong tackling, pace, tactical awareness and ability to adapt to different roles. His work rate and discipline have also made him a valuable option for the coaching staff.

Despite reported transfer interest during the current window, the Nigerian defender has chosen to continue his development with the Belgian club by committing his long-term future to Genk.

Reacting to the contract extension, Racing Genk's Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, welcomed the agreement and praised Akpan's importance to the team.

"We are delighted that Christian has decided to extend his stay with our club. His versatility makes him an incredibly valuable player for the coaching staff," De Condé said.

He added that players with Akpan's versatility provide tactical flexibility during matches and give coaches more options when adapting to different situations.

Akpan's rise at club level has also been rewarded on the international stage. His impressive displays earned him his first call-up to the Super Eagles, and he made his senior debut for Nigeria in the international friendly against Portugal in June.

The contract extension represents another significant milestone in the defender's career as he continues to establish himself in one of Belgium's top clubs while competing for a regular place in Nigeria's national team.

With his future secured until 2030, Akpan will now focus on helping Racing Genk challenge for domestic honours while continuing his development into one of Nigeria's most promising young defenders.

The new deal also provides stability for both player and club as Genk looks to build on its recent progress with a core of talented young players committed to the team's long-term ambitions.
