PSV Eindhoven Stuns Ajax to Win Eredivisie Title After Late-Season Surge

Posted : 18 May 2025

PSV Eindhoven clinched their 26th Eredivisie title in dramatic fashion, overcoming a nine-point deficit with only five games remaining to surpass rivals Ajax. Their 3-1 victory over Sparta Rotterdam sealed the championship for Peter Bosz’s side, capping off one of the most thrilling conclusions to a Dutch league season in recent memory. Just weeks earlier, Ajax had appeared poised to win the title, especially after defeating PSV 2-0 in what seemed to be a decisive match at the end of March.

However, Ajax’s form plummeted in the final stretch, losing twice and drawing twice, including a last-gasp equalizer conceded to Groningen in injury time. PSV, meanwhile, found their rhythm, stringing together six straight victories after their loss to Ajax.

That consistent run allowed them to overtake the faltering Amsterdam giants and secure the title with a game to spare. Their comeback is all the more impressive given their earlier inconsistency and struggles to match last season’s dominant domestic campaign.

While PSV had some high points this season—such as a thrilling 3-2 Champions League win over Liverpool—their European campaign ended in embarrassment after a crushing 7-1 defeat by Arsenal. Domestically, they suffered frustrating losses to mid-table teams and couldn’t beat Ajax in either league fixture.

Yet they remained resilient, particularly with a crucial stoppage-time win over Feyenoord that kept their hopes alive late in the season. Key players like Luuk de Jong, Noa Lang, and Ricardo Pepi all contributed double-digit goals in a season where PSV again surpassed 100 goals scored.

Off the pitch, PSV faced challenges too, including disciplinary issues surrounding Noa Lang, who has been at the center of controversy and transfer speculation. Despite those distractions, the team found focus when it mattered most.

De Jong admitted that even the players had nearly written off their title chances after the loss to Ajax, making the eventual triumph all the more emotional and unexpected. The dramatic turnaround served as a testament to their determination and ability to rally under pressure.

For Ajax, the season will be remembered more for what slipped away than for their second-place finish and return to Champions League football. The club had emerged from a disastrous previous campaign and looked ready to reclaim their dominance.

A mid-season leadership overhaul brought in Jordan Henderson as captain and Francesco Farioli as coach, reigniting their hopes. But their collapse late in the season, especially after coming so close, left fans bitterly disappointed. The Ajax Supporters Association summed up the mood, lamenting how the dream of a 37th title turned into heartbreak: "So near, but so far."
