PSG vs Barcelona: Ballon d’Or Contenders Set for Champions League Showdown

Posted : 20 October 2026

Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona are set to meet in the UEFA Champions League in a fixture that carries an added layer of intrigue, with several leading Ballon d’Or candidates expected to feature. The encounter brings together two European giants whose players are competing for football’s most prestigious individual award, making the match a potential showcase for their personal ambitions as well as their teams’ objectives.

PSG boast 10 players among the 30 Ballon d’Or nominees, including reigning winner Ousmane Dembele. Barcelona, meanwhile, have three representatives on the shortlist: Lamine Yamal, last year’s runner-up, Rodri, the 2024 winner, and defender Pau Cubarsi. The concentration of nominees on both sides adds significance to a meeting that might otherwise attract less attention under the Champions League’s league-phase format.

The Ballon d’Or, established by French magazine France Football in the 1950s, remains a major subject of debate in France and Spain. Barcelona and Real Madrid have traditionally championed their leading candidates, with Madrid backing Kylian Mbappe in this year’s race. Mbappe and Yamal have also made public cases for their own credentials.

Yamal, who helped Barcelona secure the La Liga title before contributing to Spain’s World Cup triumph, believes his performances speak for themselves. Speaking to French sports newspaper L’Équipe, the teenage winger highlighted his playing style, success with Barcelona and international achievements as reasons he deserves recognition. His strong start to the current campaign has further strengthened his profile, including a spectacular goal in Barcelona’s 5-2 league victory over Real Betis.

PSG midfielder Vitinha, who finished third in the 2025 Ballon d’Or standings, acknowledged Yamal’s exceptional talent but insisted his team would not be intimidated. He described the Barcelona winger as one of the world’s finest players while emphasising that PSG must prepare for the entire Barcelona squad rather than focus on one individual.

Dembele enters the contest after a remarkable 2024–25 campaign in which he scored 35 goals across all competitions and played a crucial role in PSG’s first Champions League triumph. Although his output fell to 20 goals last season, he still delivered important performances, including a goal in the Champions League final against Arsenal.

The French forward has maintained a relaxed attitude towards the award despite the competition from Mbappe and Yamal. Reflecting on his previous success, Dembele said his hard work had finally been rewarded and insisted he felt no additional pressure to win again.

PSG’s strength as a team could, however, complicate the race for the individual honour. Several players have delivered outstanding performances, making it difficult to identify a single candidate who clearly stands above the rest. Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia was among the standout performers in the previous Champions League campaign, while Fabian Ruiz has enjoyed success at both club and international levels.

Ruiz has won the Champions League and the World Cup, an achievement that strengthens his credentials, although he does not command the same individual profile as some of the leading favourites. Ferran Torres, another player associated with both clubs, has also been mentioned in the wider conversation, but his chances of winning the award remain uncertain.

PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi has publicly backed his squad, highlighting Dembele, Kvaratskhelia and Ruiz as deserving candidates. His support reflects the club’s confidence that its collective success should translate into individual recognition for more than one player.

With the Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled to take place in London on October 26, the Champions League meeting offers the contenders an opportunity to make a final impression before the awards night. The contest between PSG and Barcelona will therefore be about more than European points, with the performances of their leading stars likely to attract considerable attention.
