PSG reach Champions League final again after disciplined win over Bayern Munich

Posted : 07 May 2026

Paris Saint-Germain have once again booked their place in the Champions League final, showing a more disciplined and resilient side of their game to overcome Bayern Munich in a tense semi-final tie on Wednesday.

After an extraordinary 5-4 first-leg victory filled with attacking brilliance, PSG produced a more controlled and defensive performance in the return leg at the Allianz Arena. Ousmane Dembélé struck early inside three minutes following a swift counter-attack, giving the French champions a crucial advantage in the tie.

From that moment, PSG focused on protecting their lead, absorbing pressure from the hosts in a match where Bayern were unusually quiet in front of goal. Harry Kane eventually found an equaliser, but it came too late to change the outcome, as the match ended 1-1 and PSG progressed 6-5 on aggregate.

Head coach Luis Enrique praised his team’s maturity, highlighting their ability to defend as effectively as they attack. He described the performance as a complete display that reflected the squad’s evolution and tactical balance. Young midfielder Désiré Doué also stressed the importance of collective defensive effort in securing the result.

A standout performance came from Willian Pacho, who was dominant in defence and won every duel he contested. Meanwhile, Warren Zaïre-Emery impressed once again, stepping in at right-back and delivering a tireless display in the absence of Achraf Hakimi. His consistency and energy have made him one of PSG’s most important players this season.

PSG’s progress is particularly significant given the physical demands of a long campaign that included a Club World Cup final and limited recovery time in the summer. Despite these challenges, the team has managed to maintain form and push through to another European final.

Since their Qatari takeover in 2011, PSG have repeatedly chased Champions League success, often falling short before finally lifting the trophy last year. Now, they have become only the second club in the Champions League era to reach consecutive finals, matching Liverpool’s achievement in 2019.

They will face Arsenal in the final in Budapest on May 30, aiming to become just the second team ever to retain the Champions League title after Real Madrid’s historic run under Zinedine Zidane. Luis Enrique, already a two-time winner as a coach, now stands on the brink of joining the competition’s most successful managers.

PSG’s transformation has also been marked by the emergence of key players like Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the tactical evolution of Dembélé into a central attacking force. With confidence high and balance across the squad, they enter the final as strong contenders to defend their crown.
