Paris Saint-Germain moved to the summit of Ligue 1 after securing a 2-0 victory over Lyon at the Parc des Princes on Monday, October 26. Despite missing several important players through injury, the European champions extended their winning streak to eight matches across all competitions and recorded their fifth consecutive league victory.
Belgian forward Mika Godts played a decisive role after coming off the bench in the second half. The former Ajax player provided the assist for Senny Mayulu’s opening goal in the 72nd minute before scoring his first goal for PSG 12 minutes later to seal the win. His performance highlighted the impact of Luis Enrique’s substitutes in a match that remained goalless for more than an hour.
PSG dominated much of the contest but initially struggled to find a breakthrough against a determined Lyon side. Goalkeeper Matvey Safonov also proved important, making key saves to deny Julien Duranville and Zachary Athekame as the visitors threatened before the interval. Lyon had an opportunity to climb to the top of the table but ultimately failed to convert their chances.
Speaking after the match, PSG manager Luis Enrique praised Godts, describing the 21-year-old as a talented and ambitious player with a promising future at the club. The Spanish coach expressed confidence in the Belgian’s abilities and indicated that PSG had signed him with the intention of keeping him for years to come.
The victory came amid a difficult injury situation for PSG. Ousmane Dembele, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Nuno Mendes and captain Marquinhos were among the notable absentees. Kvaratskhelia, in particular, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury. Luis Enrique dedicated the victory to the Georgian winger, expressing the squad’s support for his recovery.
The fixture had originally been scheduled for Sunday but was moved to Monday following a request from Paris police amid security concerns linked to violent protests in the French capital. The revised schedule also coincided with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where 10 PSG players were among the nominees.
PSG now have 17 points from eight matches, one ahead of second-placed Rennes. Although the club endured a slow start to their domestic campaign, their recent run of results has put them firmly in the title race. Luis Enrique, however, cautioned against complacency, noting that the season remains long and that his team will need to build momentum ahead of the decisive stages of the campaign
