The 2026 edition of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, popularly known as the Prosperity Cup, delivered one of its biggest shocks yet as defending champions, Agbere FC, were sent packing in dramatic fashion.
At the Ebedebiri centre in Sagbama LGA, Kolobiriowei FC produced a spirited display to secure a 2–1 victory over the title holders, booking their place in the round of 32.
The underdogs set the tone early, with Arepade Asu finishing brilliantly in the 13th minute to hand Kolobiriowei the lead.
Agbere FC, however, showed glimpses of their pedigree and responded before the break, drawing level through Toledo Precious after a well-delivered ball into the box.
The second half turned into a cagey and physical contest, with Agbere pushing forward in search of a winner while Kolobiriowei stayed disciplined, soaking up pressure and looking dangerous on the counter.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the 84th minute when Israel capped off an impressive performance with the decisive goal, sealing a memorable upset and ending Agbere’s title defence.
Elsewhere, tension and drama defined matches across various centres as teams battled for LGA supremacy and qualification.
At the Ogobiri centre, Agoro United held their nerve in a fiercely contested encounter against Akeddei FC, edging through 4–3 on penalties after a 1–1 draw in regulation time.
The game, marked by its intensity, saw Agoro United assert dominance despite the physical challenge posed by their opponents.
In Yenagoa LGA, Afini FC also relied on penalties to progress, defeating NYSC FC 4–3 following a goalless draw in normal time at the Biogbolo centre.
Southern Ijaw LGA witnessed decisive outcomes as Onde United overcame Onyoma FC 2–1, while NDU Oilers FC matched that scoreline against Eniwari FC. Both sides will now clash in what promises to be a thrilling LGA final.
In Ogbia LGA, Movers FC secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Kolo Creek United, thanks to a late strike from Miracle Nathaniel in the 81st minute.
The win sets up an LGA final showdown against Edi 1 FC of Ayakoro as the race for qualification intensifies.
With surprises, late goals, and penalty shootout drama shaping the competition so far, the Prosperity Cup continues to live up to its reputation as Nigeria’s premier grassroots football spectacle.
Attention now shifts to Kolokuma/Opokuma LGA, where the next phase of LGA finals is set to unfold, bringing the tournament closer to its highly anticipated money-spinning stages.
The exit of the defending champions opens up the bracket for a new contender to seize the prestigious trophy. As the competition moves into the knockout rounds, the passion and skill displayed by these grassroots teams remain the heartbeat of the Bayelsa football community.
