Promotion Race Heats Up as All Teams Remain in Contention Ahead of Final NNL Super 8 Matchday

Posted : 08 July 2025

With just one round of fixtures left to play, the battle for promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) remains fiercely contested, as all eight teams involved in the 2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs are still mathematically in the hunt for a top-two finish in their respective groups.

Matchday 2, which took place on Monday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, produced pivotal results that left the standings wide open heading into the final day. In the Southern Conference, Warri Wolves revived their promotion hopes with a commanding 3–0 win over Kun Khalifat FC. Jude Ebhohon bagged a first-half brace, while Yarhere Efe added a third in the second half to seal a much-needed victory.

In the group’s second match, Osun United preserved their unbeaten record with a dramatic 1–1 draw against Crown FC. Wasiu Falolu opened the scoring for Crown, but Osun United snatched a late equalizer through Nurudeen Abolude, who converted a stoppage-time penalty. The result leaves all four teams within three points of each other, ensuring a tense and decisive final round in the South.

In the Northern Conference, Yobe Desert Stars edged Doma United 2–1 to go top of the standings. Despite the loss, Doma United remain in contention with one point but must win their final game to keep promotion hopes alive. Meanwhile, Wikki Tourists and Barau FC battled to a goalless draw, moving both sides to two points and setting up a dramatic final day in the northern group as well.

The last round of matches will be played on Thursday, July 10. The top two teams from each conference will gain promotion to the NPFL, while the group winners will face off in the Championship Final to determine the overall NNL champion. With no team guaranteed qualification, every fixture on Thursday carries significant stakes.

While the 2024/2025 NNL Super 8 playoffs are ongoing in Asaba, Delta State, the management of Mighty Jets International FC has resumed preparations for the upcoming 2025/2026 season after giving players a break to spend time with family and friends.

The team has returned to training with renewed energy and focus, setting the tone for a fresh start. On the first day back, the session was deliberately light, focusing on stretches and conditioning rather than ball work. The mood in camp was upbeat, with players warmly reconnecting on the training ground.

Notable players present included Elijah Simon, Nickson Ironsi, Kamal Sikiru, Mahmood Abubakar, Tehmba Akor, Shamsu Akilu, Bright Silas, Shittu Lawal, captain Saleh Mohammed, and Rotduwe Gobum. The training session was supervised by technical crew members Festus Ehiohiren and Garba Musa (Bambass), while a member of the club’s management, Mr. John Ladan, addressed the squad with words of encouragement.

Until the Nigeria National League officially announces the start date for the new season, Mighty Jets will continue their routine training sessions as they build momentum ahead of the 2025/2026 campaign.
