Promotion battle intensifies as NWFL Championship enters decisive Matchday Two

Posted : 13 July 2026

The battle for promotion to the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership gathers momentum on Tuesday as all 16 teams return to action for crucial Matchday Two fixtures of the 2026 NWFL Championship in Calabar.

With only the winners of each of the four groups advancing to the promotion playoffs, the margin for error is already narrowing after an eventful opening round, making every point vital in the race for promotion and survival.

Eight matches will be played across the U.J. Esuene Stadium and Saint Patrick Stadium, where the early pace-setters will aim to strengthen their positions, while teams that stumbled on the opening day seek to keep their ambitions alive.

In Group A, DreamStar Ladies will be looking to build on their impressive 3-1 victory over Rosaria Victrix when they face First Mahi Babes. Another victory for the Lagos side would leave them in a commanding position in the race for promotion.

First Mahi Babes, however, must respond after suffering a narrow defeat to Delta Babes, knowing another loss could significantly dent their qualification hopes.

The other Group A fixture will see Delta Babes take on Rosaria Victrix. Delta Babes will be confident after opening their campaign with a win, while Rosaria Victrix are desperate to bounce back from defeat and keep their aspirations alive.

Hosts Pelican Stars headline Group B as they take on Gallant Queens after edging Ikukuoma Queens in their opening fixture. Backed by home support, Pelican Stars will seek another victory to tighten their grip on the group.

Gallant Queens, who settled for a draw against Moje Queens in their first outing, know that maximum points would throw the group wide open.

Elsewhere, Ikukuoma Queens and Moje Queens will both chase their first win of the competition after narrowly missing out on maximum points in their opening matches.

Group C leaders Wazbak International Sports Academy will attempt to maintain their perfect start when they face Rangers Women FC. Wazbak announced themselves as serious contenders after an entertaining 3-2 victory over Fortress Ladies, and another win would move them closer to the promotion playoffs.

Rangers Women FC, who drew with Unification FC on Matchday One, will be aiming to upset the group leaders and boost their own qualification prospects.

The second Group C encounter pits Unification FC against Fortress Ladies, with both teams eager to secure their first victory. While Unification FC opened with a draw, Fortress Ladies will be looking to recover from their narrow defeat after an encouraging attacking display.

In Group D, attention shifts to a fierce South-West derby between Chosen Generation Angels and Ghetto Tigers.

Chosen Generation Angels are under pressure to recover from a heavy 3-0 defeat to Imo Striker Queens, while Ghetto Tigers will be hoping to strengthen their playoff ambitions with another positive result.

The final fixture of the day will see Imo Striker Queens take on Kwara Ladies.

Imo Striker Queens were among the standout performers on the opening day after a convincing 3-0 victory, and another success would put them firmly in control of the group.

Kwara Ladies, meanwhile, are searching for their first Championship victory since defeating Honey Badgers in the 2024 edition and will need a much-improved performance to halt the impressive Imo Striker Queens and revive their promotion hopes.

With promotion places and survival already at stake, Matchday Two promises another thrilling chapter in the battle for NWFL Premiership football. Every fixture could prove decisive as teams seek to either consolidate their positions at the top of the standings or reignite their campaigns before the race for the promotion playoffs reaches its decisive stage.
