Premier League Round-Up: Manchester Derby Win and Upsets

Posted : 19 January 2026

The Premier League served up another compelling weekend of football as fixtures on Saturday and Sunday, January 17 and 18, 2026, produced major talking points across the table. A high-profile derby win, unexpected away victories and several tense stalemates ensured fans were treated to drama at both ends of the standings.

The standout result came at Old Trafford, where Manchester United claimed local bragging rights with a 2–0 win over Manchester City. United produced a disciplined and energetic performance, taking control in the second half through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu. The victory handed City a rare setback and marked a significant morale boost for United as they continue their push up the table.

Liverpool, however, were unable to build momentum as they were held to a 1–1 draw at home by Burnley. Florian Wirtz gave the hosts the advantage, but Burnley responded with resilience, earning a deserved point after Marcus Edwards found the equaliser. The result reflected Liverpool’s ongoing struggle for consistency this season.

Chelsea enjoyed a more straightforward afternoon, recording a 2–0 victory over Brentford at Stamford Bridge. João Pedro opened the scoring before Cole Palmer calmly converted from the penalty spot, a result that kept Chelsea firmly in the hunt for European qualification.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Leeds United secured a vital 1–0 win against Fulham thanks to a dramatic late goal, boosting their survival hopes. Sunderland also impressed with a 2–1 victory over Crystal Palace, while West Ham United claimed a notable 2–1 away win over Tottenham Hotspur in a fiercely contested London derby. Arsenal were frustrated on the road, being held to a goalless draw by Nottingham Forest despite controlling long spells of the match.

Sunday’s action brought further twists, highlighted by Everton’s surprise 1–0 win away at Aston Villa. Thierno Barry scored the decisive goal in the second half, delivering a blow to Villa’s ambitions and giving Everton a valuable boost. The weekend concluded with a cagey encounter at Molineux, where Wolves and Newcastle United cancelled each other out in a 0–0 draw dominated by defensive organisation.

Overall, the weekend underlined the Premier League’s unpredictability. Big names dropped points, underdogs delivered key results and the battles for the title, European places and survival all tightened as the season moved deeper into its decisive phase.
