Premier League Returns in One Month as Europe Prepares for New Football Season

The countdown to the 2026/27 Premier League season has entered its final month, with fans set for another campaign featuring the world's biggest clubs and many of football's leading stars. The new season will begin on Friday, August 21, when defending champions Arsenal welcome newly promoted Coventry City to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal enter the new campaign after winning the Premier League title under Mikel Arteta. The Gunners will rely on key players including goalkeeper David Raya and England midfielder Declan Rice as they begin their title defence. Coventry City return to the top flight for the first time in 25 years under manager Frank Lampard, making the opening fixture one of the weekend's biggest talking points.

Manchester United also begin a new era when they visit promoted Hull City on August 22. The match will mark Michael Carrick's first league game as the club's permanent manager. Fellow newcomers Ipswich Town face Sunderland, while Tottenham Hotspur travel to Brentford after narrowly avoiding relegation last season.

Manchester City will start life after Pep Guardiola with a home match against Bournemouth on August 23. Erling Haaland, who finished as the Premier League's top scorer last season and scored seven goals for Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is expected to lead City's attack. Midfielder Rodri also returns after winning the Golden Ball during Spain's successful World Cup campaign.

Liverpool begin their first league season under Andoni Iraola with a difficult away trip to Newcastle United. Chelsea complete the opening round of fixtures with a London derby against Fulham on August 24.

The Premier League continues to showcase many of football's biggest names after providing 182 players for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, more than any other domestic league. Broadcasters will also mark the season's return with extensive coverage, including pitch-side studio shows from England throughout the opening weekend.

Away from domestic football, the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds continue to gather pace. Clubs such as Benfica, Beşiktaş, Anderlecht, PAOK, Twente and Rangers are among the teams competing for places in the league phase. The second qualifying round takes place on July 23 and 30, with the third qualifying round and play-offs scheduled throughout August before the league phase draw on August 28.

Across Europe, league campaigns are also approaching. La Liga and the Championship begin on August 14, while Serie A and Ligue 1 start on August 23. The Bundesliga opens on August 28, and the Scottish Premiership becomes the first major European league to begin its season on July 31.

With transfer activity continuing until early September and European qualification intensifying, clubs across the continent are entering one of the busiest periods of the football calendar as they prepare for another demanding season.
