Postecoglou Hailed in Australia After Leading Spurs to Europa League Glory

Posted : 22 May 2025

Ange Postecoglou received widespread praise in Australia after leading Tottenham Hotspur to their first major trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League. The 59-year-old coach guided his side to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final in Bilbao, earning acclaim for his achievement despite Tottenham's struggles in the Premier League.

Football Australia congratulated Postecoglou and his fellow Australian assistants, Mile Jedinak and Nick Montgomery, for their contributions to the triumph, calling them inspirations for future Australian coaches.

Postecoglou’s boyhood club, South Melbourne FC, celebrated his remarkable journey from a youth player to a successful international manager, highlighting his consistent success at every level. Greek-Australian newspaper Neos Kosmos described the win as a moment of community pride, while Australian politician Steve Dimopoulos also recognized the scale of the accomplishment.

Postecoglou's career has spanned coaching roles with Yokohama, Celtic, and the Australian national team, and he had predicted he would win silverware in his second season—an assertion he fulfilled in Bilbao.

Despite the celebratory mood, Postecoglou’s position at Tottenham remains uncertain due to the club's poor domestic form. However, national broadcaster ABC emphasized that the Europa League victory had proven his critics wrong. The outlet reflected on his confidence as more than bravado, presenting it instead as a testament to his unwavering belief in his methods and vision.
