Portugal Beat Chile 2-1 To Warn Super Eagles Ahead Of Leiria Friendly

The Portuguese national team warmed up for their mid-week exhibition match against Nigeria with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Chile. The international friendly match took place at the Estádio Nacional in Oeiras on Saturday, June 6, 2026. This victory extended the impressive unbeaten run of the European giants as head coach Roberto Martínez continues to fine-tune his squad configurations.

The Portuguese side dominated the first half and created multiple high-quality scoring opportunities. Central defender Rúben Dias saw his powerful header saved by Chile goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux; winger Rafael Leão later struck the post with a fine effort. Legendary captain Cristiano Ronaldo also had an early goal disallowed for an offside offense before being replaced at halftime.

Tensions boiled over just before the halftime whistle following a heated altercation between both sets of players. The referee issued straight red cards to Rafael Leão and Chilean defender Iván Román; this disciplinary action reduced both teams to ten men for the remainder of the encounter.

The home side responded efficiently after the break and established the lead in the 58th minute. Substitute forward Gonçalo Guedes found the back of the net with a clinical finish after being played through by midfielder Rúben Neves. Creative midfielder Bruno Fernandes doubled the advantage in the 74th minute; the Manchester United star curled a brilliant long-range strike into the net from outside the penalty area.

Chile scored a late consolation goal in the first minute of stoppage time through substitute forward Lucas Cepeda. However, the strike was not enough to prevent the European side from claiming a well-deserved victory as they head to Leiria.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face Portugal on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa. Head coach Éric Chelle will look to build on Nigeria's recent 2-2 draw against Poland; he also aims to avenge the painful 4-0 defeat suffered against the Seleção in 2022.
