Pochettino Reveals Past Interest in Jonathan David Ahead of Canada Clash

Posted : 06 October 2026

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed that he tried to sign Jonathan David several times during his spells with previous clubs as the United States prepare to face Canada in Minnesota. The Canadian striker has made an impressive start to his loan spell at Atlético Madrid, scoring in each of his first three appearances.

David is expected to lead Canada’s attack against Pochettino’s United States side at Allianz Field on Tuesday. The 26-year-old previously enjoyed a prolific five-year spell at Lille, scoring 109 goals before moving to Juventus in 2025, where he found the net eight times.

Pochettino described David as one of the world’s leading strikers and warned his players that they will need to remain focused on containing him. The forward has quickly rediscovered his scoring touch in Spain, including a goal in Atlético’s 2-1 victory over Real Madrid.

The United States enter the meeting with three consecutive victories, having defeated Peru, Chile and Mexico during an intense international window. Canada have also enjoyed a strong run, beating Chile and Peru without conceding, with David scoring against Chile.

Pochettino expects another fiercely contested meeting between the North American rivals as he continues to develop a younger generation of American players ahead of the next World Cup cycle. The USMNT confirmed the Canada fixture as the fourth and final match of its September-October international window.
