United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes the team’s hard-fought 3-2 friendly victory over Senegal on Sunday could play a key role in rebuilding trust and optimism among supporters as the country prepares to co-host the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.
The tournament is set to begin on June 11, with expectations high that the US squad, led by players such as Christian Pulisic, can progress deep into the knockout stages. However, recent defeats to Portugal and Belgium had dampened public confidence, making Sunday’s win a timely morale boost.
Pochettino, who took charge of the national team in September 2024, said the result was particularly important for the wider environment surrounding the team. While acknowledging that victories are always essential, he stressed that restoring belief among fans was equally significant after a difficult run of performances.
The Argentine coach highlighted the team’s attitude and collective commitment as key positives from the Senegal match, noting that the squad demonstrated both effort and attacking quality. He insisted that the players showed the right mentality needed to compete at the highest level.
Under Pochettino, the USMNT has undergone a period of transition, with the former Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain manager reshaping the squad by integrating emerging MLS talents alongside established internationals. The aim has been to increase competition for places and strengthen depth ahead of major tournaments.
Captain Christian Pulisic played a central role in the win, contributing a goal and an assist in the first half before being substituted at the break. The AC Milan forward had been under scrutiny after a long goal drought at international level, but Pochettino praised his performance and confidence boost.
The US coach also noted improvements from other players, including Sergiño Dest, who scored on his return from injury in an advanced role, while striker Folarin Balogun added a third goal after coming off the bench.
Despite the encouraging result, Pochettino warned that tougher tests lie ahead, with Germany awaiting in another high-profile friendly in Chicago. He emphasized that the focus must remain on consistency, attitude, and unity, regardless of the opponent.
The win over Senegal, a strong African side and Africa Cup of Nations finalist, comes at a crucial time as the US prepares for a challenging World Cup group stage and aims to re-establish itself among the world’s elite teams.
